The Future Scientist Series : Letter 1

 Why Should We Study Environmental Applications? 

Learning to See the World Through the Eyes of an Environmental Scientist


My dear Ayan/Saad,

Assalamu Alaikum.

Today, I am not writing to you merely as your father.

I am writing to you as your facilitator.

Over the next sixteen weeks, we are going to study a subject that many students wrongly think is simply about trees, pollution, or climate change. They memorise definitions, reproduce them in examinations, and then forget everything after the exams are over.

I do not want that for you.

I want you to finish this journey seeing the world differently. Not just with your eyes—but with your mind.

And perhaps, even more importantly, with your heart.

Let me ask you a question.

Imagine it is the year 2045.

Your own son asks,

"Abba, when people first knew that the Earth was getting warmer, rivers were becoming polluted, forests were disappearing and animals were becoming extinct... why didn't they stop it?"

What would your answer be?

Would you say, "People didn't know."

No.

·       Scientists knew.

·       Governments knew.

·       Industries knew.

·       Schools knew.

·       Even ordinary people knew.

Yet the problems continued.

Why?

That single question is the reason Environmental Applications exists.

This subject is not only about what is happening.

It is about understanding why it is happening.

 

The Doctor and the Planet

Suppose someone suddenly develops a high fever.

A doctor doesn't immediately give medicine.

·       He first asks questions.

·       When did the fever begin?

·       Have you travelled recently?

·       Any cough?

·       Any mosquito bites?

Then he orders blood tests.

Only after understanding the cause does he begin treatment.

Now imagine the Earth is the patient.

·       The forests are shrinking.

·       The rivers are polluted.

·       The air is becoming difficult to breathe.

·       The summers are getting hotter.

·       Species are disappearing.

An environmental scientist asks exactly the same question as the doctor:

"What is causing these symptoms?"

And then another question.

"How are all these problems connected?"

That is the heart of Environmental Applications.

 

Nothing Happens Alone

Suppose a farmer in Bihar cuts down trees to make more farmland.

At first, this appears to be a good decision.

More land.    More crops.   More income.          

But after a few years…

·       The soil begins washing away during the monsoon.

·          Birds disappear.     ·       Insects increase.    ·       The farmer sprays more pesticides. ·       The nearby pond becomes polluted.    ·       Fish die.    ·       The groundwater level falls. ·       The village spends more money on fertilisers.    ·       The harvest becomes smaller.

One decision.

Many consequences.

This is what scientists call an interconnected system.

Nature behaves like a giant web.

Touch one strand……the whole web moves.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is to study problems separately.

Nature never does.

 

Five Questions That Will Guide Our Journey

Over the next sixteen weeks, we shall search for answers to five important questions—the same questions introduced in your ICSE syllabus.

Question One

  • Ø  Why are ecosystems being destroyed?
  • Ø  Why are forests disappearing?
  • Ø  Why are coral reefs dying?
  • Ø  Why are many species becoming extinct?
  • Ø  Can damaged ecosystems recover?

Question Two

  • Ø  Are we running out of resources?
  • Ø  Will future generations have enough clean water?
  • Ø  Enough fertile soil?
  • Ø  Enough fossil fuels?
  • Ø  Enough forests?
  • Ø  How much should we use today?
  • Ø  How much should we save for tomorrow?

Question Three

  • Ø  What happens to everything we throw away?
  • Ø  When you throw a plastic bottle into a dustbin…
  • Ø  Where does it finally go?
  • Ø  Does "away" really exist?
  • Ø  Or does nature eventually return everything to us?

Question Four

  • Ø  Why do some people remain poor even though the Earth has abundant resources?
  • Ø  If our planet produces enough food for everyone,
  • Ø  Why do people still go hungry?
  • Ø  Why do some communities have clean drinking water while others do not?
  • Ø  What is the relationship between poverty and the environment?

 Question Five

  • Ø  How should humans use land?
  • Ø  Should every forest become farmland?
  • Ø  Should every village become a city?
  • Ø  Should every river be dammed?
  • Ø  How do we decide what is development and what is destruction?
  • Ø  These are not easy questions.
  • Ø  There are no one-line answers.
  • Ø  That is exactly why this subject is so fascinating.


Learning to Think Like a Scientist

A scientist is not someone who simply knows many facts. A scientist notices what others ignore.

For example…

When most people see smoke rising from a factory chimney, they think, "The factory is working."

An environmental scientist asks,

  • What gases are in that smoke?
  • How far will they travel?
  • Will they cause acid rain?
  • Will nearby children breathe them?
  • Can technology reduce those emissions?
  • What does the law say?
  • Is there a better solution?

The difference between ordinary observation and scientific observation is the willingness to ask deeper questions.

I hope that, by the end of these letters, you will begin asking those questions naturally.

 


Faith Meets Science

One of the most beautiful verses in the Qur'an describes the moment when Allah informed the angels:

"Indeed, I will place upon the earth a khalifah (vicegerent)." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:30)

Many people think a khalifah is simply a ruler.

But the word also carries the idea of a trustee—someone entrusted with responsibility.

Imagine a neighbour asks you to look after his beautiful garden while he travels abroad.

Would you cut down the trees?    Waste the water?     Leave rubbish everywhere?

Of course not!!!

You would care for it because it belongs to someone else and has been entrusted to you.

Similarly, this Earth is not ours to exploit without limits.

It belongs to Allah.

We are its caretakers.

Environmental science teaches us how to care for the Earth.

Islam teaches us why we should care.

Together, they give us both knowledge and purpose.

 

A Story from the Life of the Prophet

One day, the Prophet Muhammad was asked about the Hourthe end of the world.

He replied with words that have inspired Muslims for centuries:

"If the Hour (Day of Judgment) is about to be established and one of you has a sapling in his hand, let him plant it." (Musnad Ahmad)

Think about that.

If the world were ending in the next few moments, most people would stop working.

The Prophet taught the opposite.

ü  Do good until the very last moment.

ü  Plant hope.    ü  Plant life.    ü  Plant for generations you may never meet.

That is perhaps one of the greatest environmental lessons ever taught.

Remember these ideas

Environmental problems are interconnected.

Environmental issues must be understood using facts, observations, and systems thinking.

The five major themes introduced in this chapter are:

  • Ecosystem destruction
  • Resource depletion
  • Waste generation
  • Economic disparities
  • Land use

Possible Examination Questions

1. Why are environmental problems considered complex?

2. Explain why environmental issues cannot be studied in isolation.

3. Name the five major environmental concerns introduced in the syllabus.

4. Why is systems thinking important in environmental studies?

Your Mission This Week

I have a challenge for you.

For the next seven days, become an Environmental Detective.

Carry a small notebook wherever you go.

Each day, write down:

  • One environmental problem you noticed.
  • One possible cause.
  • One possible solution.

It could be:

  • Plastic on a roadside.
  • A leaking tap.
  • Smoke from a vehicle.
  • A tree being cut.
  • Food being wasted.
  • Excessive electricity use.

Do not worry whether your answers are right or wrong.

Scientists begin by observing.

Understanding comes later.

 

Before I Leave You…

Albert Einstein once said:

"Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better."

I would like to add one more sentence to his thought:

"Look deep into nature with knowledge, and you will understand your responsibility."

That responsibility belongs to your generation.

Perhaps one day, you will become an engineer who designs cleaner cities.

Perhaps a scientist who restores damaged ecosystems.

Perhaps an entrepreneur who develops technologies that reduce pollution.

Or perhaps simply a citizen who leaves the Earth a little better than he found it.

Whatever path Allah chooses for you, remember this:

Knowledge is not complete until it changes the way we live.

A Father's Note

Ayan/Saad, by the time you finish these series of letters, I do not merely want you to know Environmental Applications.

I want you to be able to walk through a village, a city, a forest, or a marketplace and quietly ask yourself:

"How does this place work? What is harming it? And what can I do to make it better?"

The day you begin asking those questions without anyone reminding you, I will know that these letters have achieved their purpose.
