Who Feeds the World? : The Story of Soil, Seeds, Farmers and the Future of Food

Assalamu
Alaikum.
This
day, before you ate your next meal, I want you to imagine something.
§ Picture a warm
chapati on your plate.
§ Perhaps some rice.
§ A bowl of dal.
§ Fresh vegetables.
§ Maybe an egg.
§ A glass of milk.
Simple
food. Nothing extraordinary.
Now
let me ask you something.
Where
did this breakfast really come from?
You
may say, "From the kitchen."
True.
But
where did your mother get it? From
the market.
And
where did the shopkeeper get it? From a
wholesaler.
Where
did the wholesaler get it? From
farmers.
Where
did the farmers get it? From
their fields.
And
where did the fields get it?
§
From
the soil.
§
From
rain.
§
From
sunlight.
§
From
seeds.
§
From
countless microorganisms hidden beneath the ground.
Suddenly
your breakfast is no longer just food. It is the final chapter of an
extraordinary story that began months earlier. Today, I want to tell you that
story.
The Greatest
Profession on Earth
When
children are asked what they want to become, they often say:
Ø Doctor.
Ø Engineer.
Ø Pilot.
Ø Scientist.
Very
few say,
"I
want to become a farmer."
Yet
every one of those professions depends on the farmer.
A
hospital cannot treat hungry patients. A
school cannot educate hungry children.
A scientist cannot work without food. Civilisation
itself began when human beings learned to cultivate the land.
That
is why agriculture is not merely another occupation.
It
is the foundation of every civilisation.
Farming before
Tractors
Thousands
of years ago, farmers had no tractors.
No
chemical fertilisers. No pesticides. No satellite weather forecasts.
Yet
many communities farmed successfully for generations.
How?
§ They observed nature.
§ They learned from
experience.
§ They understood
seasons.
§ They respected the
soil.
This
is what we now call traditional farming.
Crop Rotation:
Nature's Way of Keeping Soil Healthy
Imagine
eating only rice every day. Morning.
Afternoon. Night.
Eventually
your body would lack many nutrients.
The
soil feels the same.
If
farmers grow only one crop repeatedly, the soil loses particular nutrients.
Traditional
farmers solved this by changing crops every season.
For
example:
Year One: Wheat.
Year Two: Pulses.
Year Three: Vegetables.
Different
crops remove and return different nutrients.
This
practice is called crop rotation.
Long
before scientists understood soil chemistry, farmers had already discovered
this principle through observation.
Living with the
Forest
In
some hilly regions, communities practice shifting cultivation.
They
cultivate a small patch for a few years. Then they allow that land to recover
naturally while farming elsewhere.
Although
often criticized, when practiced traditionally with long fallow periods and low
population pressure, it can allow forests to regenerate.
The
problem arises when forests do not receive enough time to recover.
Again,
the issue is not merely the method.
It
is whether nature is given enough time to heal.
Farming for
Survival
Many
farmers around the world still grow crops mainly to feed their own families.
This
is called subsistence farming.
Their
goal is not maximum profit. It is survival. These farmers remind us that
agriculture is not only a business. For millions of people, it is a way of
life.
Why Rice in
Kerala and Wheat in Punjab?
Have
you ever wondered why farmers do not grow the same crops everywhere? The answer lies in climate and soil.
Punjab
has fertile alluvial soil and a cooler winter climate, making it ideal for
wheat.
Kerala
receives heavy rainfall and has conditions well suited for rice, spices,
coconut and rubber.
Traditional
crop varieties evolved over centuries to suit local conditions. They often
required fewer chemicals and resisted local pests more effectively.
Nature
and culture grew together.
The Green
Revolution:
A Miracle with a Warning
By
the 1960s, India faced serious food shortages.
Scientists
and farmers introduced:
- high-yielding
crop varieties,
- irrigation,
- chemical
fertilisers,
- pesticides,
- modern
machinery.
Food
production increased dramatically. Millions were saved from hunger.
This
achievement became known as the Green Revolution.
It
showed what science could accomplish. But every solution must also be examined
carefully.
Over
time, new challenges appeared. Soil fertility declined in some regions. Groundwater
levels fell because of excessive irrigation. Chemical fertilisers and
pesticides polluted rivers and soil. Traditional crop varieties disappeared.
This
teaches us a valuable lesson.
Science
is powerful. But every innovation must be used wisely.
A Strange
Question
If
the world produces enough food... Why do people still go hungry?
The
answer is difficult. Food shortage is not always the problem.
Sometimes
the problem is:
o
Poor
distribution.
o
Food
wastage.
o
Poverty.
o
Conflict.
o
Lack
of storage.
Imagine
one classroom where a few students receive ten lunches while others receive
none.
The
problem is not food production. The
problem is distribution.
Environmental
scientists therefore ask not only: "Can
we produce more?"
They
also ask: "Can
everyone receive enough?"
Farming That
Learns from Nature
Today,
many scientists and farmers are rediscovering ideas that traditional
communities understood long ago.
Ø Do-Nothing Farming
The
Japanese farmer Masanobu Fukuoka believed that nature often knows best. He
disturbed the soil as little as possible and allowed natural processes to
maintain fertility.
Ø Biodynamic Farming
Rudolf
Steiner
encouraged farmers to view farms as living systems where soil, crops, animals
and people are interconnected.
Ø Permaculture
Bill
Mollison
designed farming systems that imitate natural ecosystems, making agriculture
productive while conserving resources.
Ø Integrated Farming
Farmers
combine crops, livestock, fish and trees so that the waste from one becomes the
resource for another.
Ø Low Input Sustainable
Agriculture (LISA)
This
approach reduces dependence on expensive chemical inputs while protecting the
environment.
Different
methods. One common idea.
Work
with nature—not against it.
Can
Biotechnology Feed the Future?
This
is one of the most exciting questions in modern science.
Scientists
are developing crops that:
· Need less water.
· Resist diseases.
· Tolerate drought.
· Provide better
nutrition.
This
is the promise of biotechnology.
But
environmental scientists also ask important questions.
o
Could
new technologies reduce biodiversity?
o
Could
farmers become dependent on expensive seeds?
o
Could
ecosystems be affected?
The
ICSE syllabus does not ask you to accept or reject biotechnology.
It
asks you to think critically. Science progresses by asking careful questions.
Looking Beyond
the Textbook
You
know how interested you are in Artificial Intelligence and precision
fermentation.
Imagine
a future where:
ü AI tells farmers
exactly when crops need water.
ü Drones detect plant
diseases before they spread.
ü Robots remove weeds
without herbicides.
ü Precision
fermentation produces proteins using microorganisms, reducing pressure on
farmland.
ü Scientists breed
climate-resilient crops for a warming world.
These
are no longer dreams. Many are already becoming reality.
Your
generation may see agriculture transformed in ways my generation never
imagined.
Faith Meets
Science
Allah
says: "Then let mankind look at his food." (Surah 'Abasa 80:24)
The
verses that follow describe rain, soil, seeds, plants, fruits and grazing
lands.
The
Qur'an invites us to trace food back to its source.
Exactly
what environmental science asks us to do?
Every
meal is a reminder of an extraordinary chain of blessings:
· Rain.
· Soil.
· Seeds.
· Sunlight.
· Farmers.
· Transporters.
· Shopkeepers.
· Parents.
When
we say "Alhamdulillah" before and after eating, we are
acknowledging not only the food—but the entire system Allah has created to
provide it.
A Lesson from
the Prophet ﷺ
The
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "No Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds,
and then a bird, a person or an animal eats from it, except that it is counted
as charity (ṣadaqah) for
him." (Sahih
al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
Think
about that.
A
farmer may never know who eats the fruit from the tree he planted.
A
bird. A traveller. A child.
Yet
every benefit continues to earn reward. What a beautiful way to think about
agriculture—not merely as producing food, but as serving Allah's creation.
Think like a
Scientist
The
next time you eat a simple meal, ask yourself:
- Which
crop is this?
- Which
soil helped it grow?
- How
much water was needed?
- Was
it grown sustainably?
- How
far did it travel before reaching my plate?
- How
much food do I waste each week?
These
questions transform eating into learning.

many people helped bring it to your plate?
- Could
any part of it have been wasted?
Then
write one paragraph answering this question:
"How can I
honour Allah's blessing of food by wasting less?"

many people believe that food begins in the supermarket. It does not!!!
It
begins with a seed placed gently into the soil by hands that often remain
unseen.
The
farmer trusts that rain will come. The
soil will nourish. The sun will
shine. The Creator will provide.
Every
loaf of bread, every bowl of rice, every fruit and every glass of milk is a
quiet reminder that civilisation still depends on the oldest partnership in
history:
The
partnership between human effort and Allah's creation.
As

the soil is not only about growing crops. It is about protecting the very foundation
of life.
