Every Species Has a Job : Why Allah Never Created Anything without a Purpose

Assalamu
Alaikum.
Today,
I want to begin with a question that may sound rather strange.
Suppose
tomorrow morning, every mosquito on Earth disappeared!!!
Would
the world become a better place?
I
can almost hear your answer.
"Of
course, Abba! We would finally sleep peacefully."
Many
people would agree with you.
Now
let me ask another question.
Ø What if every bee
disappeared?
Ø Or every earthworm?
Ø Or every mushroom?
Ø Or every frog?
Ø Or every shark?
Ø Or every crocodile?
At
first, we think the world would become safer.
But
nature often surprises us.
The
greatest mistake human beings make is believing that only the things useful
to us are important.
Nature
does not think that way.
Allah
does not create anything without wisdom.
Every
creature has a purpose, whether we understand it or not.
Today,
let us discover why.
A School
Without Teachers
Imagine
your school.
One
morning you arrive and discover that all the teachers have disappeared.
The
classrooms remain. The desks remain. The playground remains. The students
remain.
Could
the school still function?
Probably
not.
Now
imagine the teachers return but the electricity disappears. Then water. Then
books. Then the principal.
Gradually,
the school stops functioning.
The
same thing happens in nature.
A
forest is not simply a place with trees.
It
is a community where every species performs a unique role.
Scientists
call this role an ecological niche.
Every Species
Has a Profession
Think
of a city.
ü Some people are
doctors.
ü Some are farmers.
ü Some repair roads.
ü Some teach.
ü Some build houses.
ü Some collect waste.
Imagine
if every person wanted to become a doctor.
Could
the city survive?
Certainly
not.
Nature
works in exactly the same way.
ü Bees pollinate
flowers.
ü Earthworms loosen the
soil.
ü Owls control rats.
ü Fungi recycle dead
plants.
ü Vultures clean
carcasses.
ü Even bacteria work tirelessly
beneath our feet.
Each
organism has its own profession.
This
profession is called its ecological niche.
A
niche is much more than a place to live.
It
includes:
- what
the organism eats,
- where
it lives,
- how
it reproduces,
- when
it is active,
- how
it interacts with other organisms,
- and
the role it performs in maintaining the ecosystem.
Two
species may share the same forest... but each has a completely different job.
Habitat Is an
Address.
Niche Is a
Profession.
Students
often confuse these two ideas.
Imagine
your friend lives in Samastipur.
His
address tells us where he lives.
But
his profession tells us what he does.
Similarly,
Habitat answers: Where does an organism live?
Niche answers: What does it do there?
A
tiger's habitat may be a forest.
Its
niche is controlling herbivore populations and maintaining ecological balance.
Remember
this distinction.
It
is a favourite concept in ecology.
Tiny Worlds
Inside Bigger Worlds
Now
imagine standing beneath a large banyan tree.
To
you, it is just one tree.
But
to nature... it is an entire city.
Inside
that one tree:
§ Ants live beneath the
bark.
§ Birds build nests.
§ Spiders weave webs.
§ Lichens grow on the
trunk.
§ Mosses cover damp
areas.
§ Tiny insects hide
beneath leaves.
Each
one occupies a different microhabitat.
A
microhabitat is simply a small habitat within a larger one.
It
reminds us that even a single tree contains astonishing diversity.
Why Do Camels
Live in Deserts?
Suppose
you released a camel in Antarctica. Or a penguin in the Thar Desert. Could they
survive?
Not
for long.
Over
thousands of years, living things slowly adapt to their surroundings.
Scientists
call these locally adapted forms ecotypes.
Plants
growing on windy mountains differ from those growing in sheltered valleys.
Rice
varieties adapted to Kerala differ from those grown in Punjab.
Nature
shapes life according to climate, soil and water.
That
is why local varieties are often best suited to local conditions.
What Is a
Species?
People
often say,
"A
tiger is an animal." "A cow is an animal." "A dog is an
animal."
True.
But
scientists need something more precise.
A
species is a group of similar organisms that can naturally reproduce and
produce fertile offspring.
Lions
belong to one species.
Tigers
belong to another.
Humans
belong to one species.
This
idea helps scientists measure biodiversity and understand extinction.
The Special
Citizens of Nature
Some
species live almost everywhere. Others exist only in one particular place.
These
are called endemic species.
Think
of them as permanent residents who have never lived anywhere else.
For
example: The Lion-tailed Macaque is found naturally only in the Western
Ghats of India.
If
its forests disappear... its entire future is threatened.
Protecting
endemic species means protecting the only home they have.
Guests Can
Sometimes Become Troublemakers
Imagine
inviting one guest into your house.
Instead
of behaving politely... he throws everyone else out and takes over the entire
home.
That
is what some introduced species do.
An
introduced species is brought from another region, either intentionally
or accidentally.
Some
settle peacefully.
Others
spread rapidly.
They
compete with native plants and animals for food, space and sunlight.
One
famous example in India is Lantana, introduced during the British
period.
Today
it has spread across forests, preventing native plants from growing.
The
lesson is simple.
Nature
is carefully balanced.
Even
good intentions can sometimes create unexpected problems.
The Pillars of
the Ecosystem
Imagine
removing one brick from your house.
Nothing
happens.
Remove
one wall... the roof collapses.
Certain
species are like that supporting wall.
Scientists
call them keystone species.
Their
influence is much greater than their numbers.
Consider
crocodiles.
Many
people see them only as dangerous predators.
But
crocodiles keep fish populations balanced, maintain healthy wetlands and even
create small water channels used by many other organisms during dry seasons.
Similarly:
Sharks
maintain healthy oceans.
Fungi
recycle nutrients.
Elephants
create forest pathways used by smaller animals.
Lose
a keystone species... and the entire ecosystem begins to weaken.
Extinction:
When Silence Replaces Life
Have
you ever noticed how quiet a forest feels without birds?
Now
imagine a forest where:
· No birds sing.
· No butterflies fly.
· No bees buzz.
· No frogs croak.
The
trees remain.
But
something beautiful has disappeared.
This
is extinction.
Extinction
means a species no longer exists anywhere on Earth.
Throughout
history, extinction happened naturally.
Today,
however, many extinctions are driven by human activity.
· Deforestation.
· Pollution.
· Climate change.
· Poaching.
· Invasive species.
Every
extinction removes one thread from nature's web.
Enough
broken threads...and the web itself begins to collapse.
Faith Meets
Science
Allah
says in the Qur'an:
"There is no
creature on the earth, nor a bird that flies with its wings, except that they
are communities like you."
(Surah Al-An'am 6:38)
Pause
for a moment.
Communities:
Not objects. Not resources.
Communities:
Each with its own way of living. Its own purpose. Its own role.
The
Qur'an teaches us to look at animals not merely as things that exist for our
benefit, but as creations with their own place in Allah's plan.
Modern
ecology has arrived at a remarkably similar understanding.
Every
species contributes to the stability of life.
A Lesson from
the Prophet ﷺ
The
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once narrated the story of a woman who
imprisoned a cat.
She
neither fed it nor allowed it to find food on its own. Because of this cruelty,
she was held accountable before Allah.
On
another occasion, he told of a man who gave water to a thirsty dog, and Allah
forgave his sins because of that act of compassion.
Think
about the contrast.
One
person was punished for neglecting an animal.
Another
was rewarded for showing mercy.
In
Islam, our relationship with animals reflects our relationship with the
Creator.
Environmental
responsibility begins with mercy.
Think Like a
Scientist
The
next time you see a spider in the corner of a room... don't ask, "Is it
useful?"
Ask,
"What role does it play?"
The
next time you hear frogs after the rain... don't ask, "Why are they
making so much noise?"
Ask,
"What would happen if they disappeared?"
Curiosity
is the beginning of science.
Respect
is the beginning of wisdom.

society often teaches us to value people by their wealth, fame, or power.
Nature
teaches a different lesson.
The
tiny honeybee, weighing less than a paperclip, helps produce many of the fruits
and vegetables we eat. The humble earthworm quietly improves the soil beneath
our feet. The unseen fungus recycles nutrients that feed forests.
Greatness
is not measured by size. It is measured by the role one faithfully performs. Perhaps
that is true for human beings as well.

Allah help you discover your own unique place in His creation—and fulfill it
with sincerity, knowledge, and compassion.
