Nothing Ever Goes "Away" : The Hidden Journey of Waste, Resources and the Things We Throw Away

dear Ayan/Saad,
Assalamu
Alaikum!
This
morning I want you to do something very unusual.
Before
anyone empties the dustbin... stand in front of it for just one minute.
Look
inside. You may find:
- a
banana peel,
- a
plastic wrapper,
- an
empty milk packet,
- yesterday's
newspaper,
- a
broken pen,
- food
scraps,
- an
old battery,
- a
disposable cup.
Now
ask yourself one simple question.
Where
will all of this be tomorrow?
Most
people answer immediately.
"The
garbage collector will take it away."
Away!!!
Such an interesting word! But where exactly is away?
Does
the Earth have an "away"? Or do we simply move waste from one place
to another?
Today,
I want to tell you a secret that changed the way I look at every dustbin.
In
nature, nothing truly goes away.
Nature's Perfect
Recycling System
Imagine
walking through a forest. A leaf
falls from a tree.
Does
anyone collect it? No.
Does
anyone burn it? No.
Does
anyone carry it to a landfill? No.
The
leaf quietly becomes food for fungi. Earthworms
break it into smaller pieces. Bacteria decompose it further. Slowly it becomes part of the soil.
Months
later...that same soil nourishes another tree.
Nature
wastes nothing. Everything becomes
something else.
Scientists
call this nutrient cycling.
For
millions of years, Earth had no garbage dumps.
Because
nature had discovered recycling long before humans invented the word.
Then Humans
Invented "Throw Away"
Imagine
buying a bottle of water. You
drink it in five minutes.
The
plastic bottle may remain on Earth for hundreds of years.
Think
about that. Five minutes of
usefulness. Hundreds of years of pollution!
Our
ancestors repaired things. Today... we
replace them.
Our
grandparents stitched torn clothes. Today
we buy new ones.
Earlier
generations reused glass bottles. Today many
are used once and thrown away.
Convenience
has become one of the greatest challenges for the environment.
The Story of a
Plastic Bottle
Let's
follow one ordinary bottle.
o
You
buy it.
o
Drink
from it.
o
Throw
it into a dustbin.
o
What
happens next?
o
Perhaps
it reaches a landfill.
o
Perhaps
it blows into a drain.
o
The
drain carries it into a river.
o
The
river carries it to the sea.
o
A
turtle mistakes it for food.
o
A
fish swallows tiny pieces of plastic.
o
That
fish is caught.
Eventually... plastic may return to our own dinner plates as
microplastics.
The
journey of waste often ends where it began—with us.
Are We Running
Out of Resources?
Imagine
your pocket contains ₹1,000. Every
day you spend ₹100. But you never earn another rupee. How long before your money disappears?
Natural
resources work in a similar way.
Some
resources renew themselves.
Trees
can regrow. Rain refills rivers. Fish populations can recover if protected.
These
are renewable resources.
Others
take millions of years to form.
Coal. Petroleum. Natural
gas.
These
are non-renewable resources.
Every
litre of petrol burned today is part of a resource that took geological ages to
form. The Earth has been saving it for millions of years. We are using much of
it in barely two centuries.
Why Does Waste
Matter?
Some
students think waste is simply "dirty."
Environmental
scientists know it is much more than that. Waste
can:
- pollute
rivers,
- contaminate
soil,
- poison
groundwater,
- release
harmful gases,
- spread
diseases,
- kill
wildlife,
- waste
valuable materials that could have been reused.
A
landfill is not simply a pile of rubbish. It
is a sign that resources have been used only once before being discarded.
Not All Waste
Is the Same
Imagine
two dustbins.
The
first contains:
Vegetable
peels. Fruit skins. Leaves. Food
leftovers.
These
can decompose naturally.
They
are called biodegradable waste.
The
second contains:
Plastic
bottles. Aluminium foil. Glass. Electronic
waste. Old batteries.
These
either decompose extremely slowly—or not at all.
Some
release dangerous chemicals.
They
are non-biodegradable or hazardous waste.
Understanding
this difference is the first step towards proper waste management.
The Dangerous
Journey of Hazardous Waste
Now
imagine something troubling.
A
rich country produces large amounts of hazardous waste. Treating it safely
costs enormous amounts of money.
Instead
of processing it responsibly... it ships the waste to poorer countries.
The
pollution disappears from the rich country's map. But not from the Earth.
People
living near dumping sites suffer contaminated water, polluted soil and serious
health problems.
This
is not merely an environmental issue. It is also an issue of justice.
The Basel
Convention
Because
hazardous waste was increasingly crossing international borders, many countries
came together to create an international agreement called the Basel
Convention.
Its
purpose is simple.
Hazardous
waste should be handled responsibly. Countries should not treat poorer nations
as dumping grounds for dangerous waste. This reminds us that environmental
problems often require international cooperation.
The
atmosphere has no passport. Neither
do rivers. Neither does pollution.
Land Is More than
Empty Space
Imagine
looking at a satellite photograph.
Some
areas are forests. Some are farms. Some are cities. Some are wetlands.
Some are deserts.
Every
piece of land performs a different function.
But
as cities expand... farmland shrinks. Forests
disappear. Wetlands are filled. Industrial
areas grow.
This
is called land-use change.
The
challenge is not preventing development.
The
challenge is deciding where development should occur and what should remain
protected.
Faith Meets
Science
Allah
says in the Qur'an: "Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of
the devils, and Satan has always been ungrateful to his Lord." (Surah
Al-Isra 17:27)
This
verse has always amazed me. Notice that Allah does not merely discourage waste.
He links wastefulness with ingratitude. Why?
Because
every blessing we waste—food, water, electricity, paper, fuel—is a blessing we
have failed to appreciate.
Environmental
science calls this resource efficiency. The
Qur'an calls it gratitude. The language is different. The lesson is the
same.
A Lesson from
the Prophet ﷺ
One
day the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (RA)
while he was performing wudu. Seeing him using more water than
necessary, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"What is this
extravagance?" Sa'd asked, "Can there be extravagance even
in wudu?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Yes, even if you are at a flowing
river." (Reported by Ibn Majah)
Think
about that. Imagine standing beside an endless flowing river. Most people would think, "Water is abundant. Use as
much as you like."
The
Prophet ﷺ taught the opposite.
Waste
is wrong even when resources seem plentiful. This is perhaps one of the
earliest and clearest lessons on sustainable resource use.
Think Like a
Scientist
The
next time you throw something into a dustbin... Pause for five seconds.
Ask
yourself:
- Could
this have been avoided?
- Could
it have been repaired?
- Could
it have been reused?
- Could
it have been recycled?
- What
resources were used to make it?
You
will soon discover that waste begins long before the dustbin. It begins with
our choices.

Remember,
scientists measure before they improve.
Before I Signoff...
Ayan/Saad,
one of the greatest misunderstandings of modern life is this: People think they
own the things they buy.
In
reality, every object we purchase comes with an invisible responsibility.
A
plastic bottle is not only plastic.
§ It is petroleum.
§ Energy.
§ Water.
§ Human labour.
§ Transport.
§ Time.
§ Natural resources.
Every
object tells a story.
The
question is whether we honour that story—or end it carelessly in a dustbin.
The
day you begin seeing waste not as rubbish, but as misplaced resources, you will
have taken another step towards becoming the environmental scientist/citizen I
hope you will be.
May
Allah make you among those who are grateful for His blessings, careful with His
resources, and mindful that even the smallest daily choices can protect—or
harm—the beautiful Earth He has entrusted to us.
