When Humans Changed the Rules : The Story of Development, Cities and Our Ecological Footprint

dear Ayan/Saad,
Assalamu
Alaikum.
Today,
I want you to imagine something impossible.
Imagine
you wake up tomorrow morning... and every human being has disappeared.
Not
the buildings. Not the roads. Not the cars.
Only
people.
What
would happen?
The
first day!!! nothing much.
The
lights would still be on in many places. The trains would stop. The markets
would be empty.
After
a week... pets would wander freely.
Grass
would begin growing through cracks in the roads.
After
a few months... birds would nest in abandoned buildings.
Wild
animals would slowly return to places they had left decades ago.
After
a hundred years... many cities would begin to resemble forests.
Nature
would quietly reclaim the land.
Now
imagine the opposite.
Imagine
the Earth's population suddenly doubles.
Twice
as many houses. Twice as many
vehicles. Twice as much food. Twice as much electricity. Twice as much waste.
Would
the Earth cope? Or would it
struggle?
These
questions bring us to one of the most important ideas in environmental science:
How
should humans develop without destroying the systems that support life?
What Does
"Development" Really Mean?
When
you hear the word development, what comes to mind?
Tall
buildings? Wide highways? Fast internet? Modern hospitals?
Factories? Shopping malls?
These
are certainly signs of development.
But
let me ask another question.
o
If
a city has flyovers but polluted air...
o
If
people earn more money but rivers become poisonous...
o
If
food production increases but the soil becomes infertile...
Can
we truly call that development?
Environmental
scientists say: Real development improves the quality of life without destroying
the natural systems on which life depends.
Development
should not solve one problem while creating ten new ones.
People Are Not
a Burden—They Are a Resource
Some
people believe that population itself is the problem.
The
ICSE syllabus encourages us to think more deeply.
People
are not merely mouths to feed.
§ They are also minds
that think.
§ Hands that work.
§ Hearts that care.
§ A child today may
become tomorrow's engineer, doctor, farmer, teacher or scientist.
A
country becomes strong not simply because it has many people... but because it
educates them, keeps them healthy, and enables them to contribute.
Human
beings are the most valuable renewable resource on Earth—provided they are
given opportunities to grow.
Technology: Friend or Foe?
o
Imagine
life without electricity.
o
No
lights.
o
No
mobile phones.
o
No
hospitals with life-saving equipment.
o
No
internet.
Technology
has transformed our lives in extraordinary ways.
It
has reduced hard labour, improved communication, increased food production and
advanced medicine.
Yet
every powerful tool has another side.
o
Coal-powered
electricity produces pollution.
o
Plastic
makes life convenient but creates mountains of waste.
o
Cars
provide mobility but contribute to climate change.
o
Chemical
fertilisers increase crop yields but can damage soil and water.
Technology
itself is neither good nor bad.
What
matters is how wisely we use it.
A
scientist asks not only, "Can we build it?"
But
also, "Should we build it?"
A City That
Eats More Than It Produces
Let's
visit a large city.
Imagine
Delhi, Mumbai, or even the growing city of Patna.
Every
morning:
· Thousands of trucks
bring vegetables.
· Tankers bring water.
· Power stations send
electricity.
· Pipelines carry fuel.
· Milk arrives from
villages.
· Fish arrive from
distant coasts.
· Construction
materials arrive from many states.
Now
ask yourself: Where does all this come
from? Not from the city itself.
A
city survives because millions of people outside the city provide its
resources.
Similarly...
every evening...
· Garbage leaves the city.
· Sewage leaves the
city.
· Smoke rises into the
atmosphere.
· Plastic reaches
rivers.
Cities
consume resources from a vast surrounding area and generate enormous quantities
of waste.
Scientists
describe this demand using a fascinating idea.
The Ecological
Footprint
Imagine
you leave footprints while walking across wet sand.
Now
imagine every person leaves another kind of footprint—not on sand, but on
nature.
This
is called an ecological footprint.
It
measures how much land and water are needed to provide:
- food,
- energy,
- clothing,
- housing,
- transport,
And
to absorb the waste we produce.
Some
people have very small footprints.
Others
consume resources equal to several Earths.
The
question is not simply:
"How much do I
own?"
The
better question is:
"How much of the
Earth am I using?"
Can the Earth
Support Everyone?
Suppose
your classroom has forty chairs.
If
forty students arrive... everyone sits comfortably.
If
eighty students arrive... what happens?
Some
stand. Some squeeze together. Some cannot enter.
Nature
works in a similar way.
Every
ecosystem has a carrying capacity.
Carrying
capacity is the maximum number of organisms an environment can support without
being damaged.
If
this limit is crossed...
§ Food becomes scarce.
§ Water becomes
limited.
§ Habitats shrink.
§ Competition
increases.
Understanding
carrying capacity helps governments and scientists plan for sustainable
development.
Poverty and the
Environment
At
first glance, poverty and environmental science seem unrelated.
But
look more carefully.
A
poor family may depend directly on nearby forests for fuelwood.
If
forests disappear... their daily lives become even harder.
A
fishing community depends on clean rivers.
If
rivers are polluted... their livelihood suffers.
Farmers
depend on healthy soil.
If
the soil is degraded... their harvest declines.
Likewise,
environmental degradation often affects the poorest communities first and most
severely.
This
is why solving environmental problems is also a matter of social justice.
The Story of
Two Villages
Imagine
two villages.
The
first cuts every tree to earn quick money.
For
a few years, the villagers prosper. Then the rains wash away the soil. Streams
dry up. Farms become less productive. Young people migrate to cities.
The
second village harvests trees carefully, plants new saplings, conserves water
and protects grazing lands.
Their
income grows more slowly. But twenty years later... their forests remain
healthy. Their farms are fertile. Their children inherit resources instead of
problems.
Both
villages developed.
But
only one developed sustainably.
Faith Meets
Science
Allah
says in the Qur'an: "Eat and
drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not love those who commit
excess." (Surah Al-A'raf 7:31)
Notice
that Allah does not forbid enjoying His blessings.
He
warns against excess.
Environmental
science uses words like sustainability, resource efficiency, and ecological
balance.
The
Qur'an teaches the same principle in a timeless way:
ü Take what you need.
ü Do not waste.
ü Do not exploit.
ü Leave enough for
others.
ü And leave enough for
those who come after you.
A Lesson from
the Prophet ﷺ
The
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived simply even when he had the
opportunity to live comfortably.
His
home contained very few possessions. He
repaired what could be repaired. He
shared what he had. He
disliked waste and extravagance.
This
simplicity was not poverty. It was
conscious living.
Today,
many people believe happiness comes from buying more.
The
Prophet ﷺ taught that true contentment comes
from gratitude and moderation.
Imagine
how different our planet would be if every person lived with that mindset.
Think Like a
Scientist
The
next time you switch on a light...
Ask
Yourself:
- Where
did this electricity come from?
- Was
it generated by coal, water, wind or sunlight?
- How
much pollution was produced?
- Could
I use less?
The
next time you throw away food...
Ask
Yourself:
- How
much water was used to grow it?
- How
much land?
- How
much labour?
Scientists
do not merely see objects.
They
see the hidden story behind every object.

- Where
did those resources come from?
- How
much energy was used?
- What
waste was generated?
- Can
it be reused or recycled?
You
will discover that every object has an environmental story hidden behind it.

history often celebrates those who built the tallest buildings, the biggest
factories and the fastest machines.
But
I believe the future will honour something even greater.
The
people who learned to build without destroying.
The
engineers who designed cleaner technologies.
The
farmers who restored the soil.
The
entrepreneurs who created businesses that respected nature.
The
citizens who understood that progress is not measured only by what we
create—but also by what we preserve.
As
you continue this journey, remember:
The
Earth is not asking us to stop developing.
It
is asking us to develop wisely.
May
Allah grant you the wisdom to distinguish between what is merely profitable and
what is truly beneficial—for yourself, for society, and for His creation.
