Everything Is Connected : The Day I Stopped Seeing Environmental Problems—and Started Seeing One Living Planet
My
dear Ayan/Saad,
Assalamu
Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
Today,
I am not going to teach you a new chapter. Instead, I want to teach you a new
way of thinking.
Do
you remember the very first letter?
I
told you that Environmental Applications is not really about pollution or
forests or rivers or climate change.
It
is about connections. Today I
want to prove that.
Imagine Pulling
One Thread...
Have
you ever seen a woollen sweater?
Imagine
pulling just one loose thread. At first!!!... Nothing happens. Pull a little
more. Soon another thread loosens. Then another. Eventually... the entire
sweater begins to unravel.
The
Earth works exactly the same way.
Environmental
problems rarely begin as disasters.
They
begin with one loose thread.
Let Us Tell the
Story of One Tree
Suppose
someone cuts down one large banyan tree. One tree! That doesn't sound serious. Does
it?
Now
let's wait.
The
birds that nested there disappear. Without birds... fewer seeds are dispersed. Fewer
new trees grow.
Without
shade... the soil becomes hotter. Earthworms become fewer. Soil fertility
declines.
Rainwater
runs off more quickly. Groundwater recharge decreases. Nearby wells begin
drying. Farmers irrigate more. Groundwater falls further.
Electricity
consumption increases because more pumping is needed. Carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere increases because one less tree is absorbing it. The village becomes
slightly warmer. Perhaps the difference is only one degree. But insects breed
faster. Some diseases spread more easily.
One
tree!
Hundreds
of consequences!!!
That
is why environmental scientists never ask, "What happened?"
They
ask, "What else happened because of it?"
The Planet Is
One Giant Ecosystem
When
you first learned about ecosystems in Letter 2, you studied a pond. Then a
forest! Then farmland!
But
today I want you to imagine something much larger.
The
entire Earth is one enormous ecosystem.
§ The Amazon rainforest
helps influence rainfall patterns thousands of kilometres away.
§ The Himalayas affect
the Indian monsoon.
§ The oceans absorb
enormous amounts of carbon dioxide.
§ Tiny plankton
floating in the sea produce much of the oxygen we breathe.
§ Dust from the Sahara
Desert even carries minerals that nourish forests in South America.
Nothing
exists in isolation! Not countries! Not forests!
Not oceans! Not people.
The Triple
Planetary Crisis
Scientists
around the world often describe today's environmental challenges as the Triple
Planetary Crisis.
It
has three parts.
Ø Climate Change
Ø Pollution
Ø Biodiversity Loss
At
first they seem different. They are not.
Imagine
a forest is cleared.
Trees
disappear. Carbon dioxide
increases. Climate change
worsens. Wildlife loses habitat. Biodiversity
declines. The exposed soil erodes. Rivers become polluted. Fish populations decrease. Food
security is affected.
One
action! Three
crises! One
interconnected planet!
Climate Change
Is More than Hotter Summers
Many
people think climate change simply means rising temperatures.
It
is much more.
o
Warmer
oceans strengthen cyclones.
o
Changing
rainfall affects agriculture.
o
Glaciers
melt.
o
Sea
levels rise.
o
Coral
reefs bleach.
o
Some
species struggle to survive.
o
Others
move into new regions.
o
Diseases
spread differently.
Climate
change touches almost every chapter you have studied so far.
Pollution Never
Stays Where It Begins
Imagine
someone burns plastic in an empty field. The smoke rises. The wind carries it. Particles
travel across villages and cities. Rain washes pollutants into rivers. Fish
absorb them. People eat the fish.
The
pollution returns. Nature has no separate compartments. Everything circulates.
Biodiversity: Nature's Insurance Policy
Imagine
an orchestra.
If
only violins remain... is it still an orchestra? No.
You
need flutes, Drums, Pianos, Cellos. Each
contributes something unique.
Nature
is the same. Greater biodiversity makes ecosystems stronger.

Some
plants resist drought.
o
Others
resist floods.
o
Some
insects pollinate crops.
o
Others
control pests.
The
more diverse nature is...the better it can adapt to change.
Biodiversity
is Earth's insurance policy.
The Butterfly
Story
You
may have heard of something called the Butterfly Effect.
The
idea is simple. Tiny actions can sometimes lead to enormous consequences. Whether
or not a butterfly actually changes the weather is less important than the
lesson itself.
Every
action matters.
Throwing
one plastic bottle into a river may seem insignificant. But millions of people
thinking the same way create an ocean of plastic.
Planting
one tree seems small. But millions of people planting trees transform landscapes.
History
often changes because ordinary people repeatedly do small things.
What About
Artificial Intelligence?
You
might have often wondered whether AI will solve environmental problems.
My
answer is... AI will not save the planet. People using AI wisely might.
Artificial
Intelligence can:
§ predict floods,
§ optimise irrigation,
§ monitor forests,
§ reduce electricity
waste,
§ identify illegal
mining,
§ forecast crop
diseases,
§ improve disaster
response.
But
AI cannot decide what is right.
Only
human values can do that. Technology provides power. Character decides how that
power is used.
Faith Meets
Science
Allah
says: "Corruption has appeared on
land and sea because of what people's hands have earned, so He may let them
taste part of the consequence of what they have done, that perhaps they will
return." (Surah Ar-Rum 30:41)
This
verse is remarkable.
It
does not say every disaster is caused by humans. Nor does it deny natural
events. Instead, it reminds us that human actions have consequences.
Modern
environmental science observes that deforestation, pollution, overconsumption,
and poor land management can worsen floods, droughts, biodiversity loss, and
climate risks.
The
Qur'an invites us not to despair—but to return: to wiser choices,
greater justice, and responsible stewardship.
Faith
offers hope alongside accountability.
A Story from
the Prophet ﷺ
One
day, a companion asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: "Who is the best of people?" Among
the meanings conveyed in his teachings is that the best people are those who
are most beneficial to others.
Think
about that.
Imagine
an engineer who designs cleaner engines. A scientist who develops
drought-resistant crops. A teacher who inspires students to protect rivers. A
doctor who reduces medical waste. A farmer who restores degraded soil.
Each
one benefits countless people.
Environmental
science is not only about protecting nature. It is about serving humanity.
The Most
Important Diagram You Will Ever Draw
Throughout
this course you will have studied many diagrams.
Ø Food chains.
Ø Food webs.
Ø Watersheds.
Ø Energy flow.
Today
I want you to draw one final diagram.
Write

Everything
is connected.
Think like a
Systems Scientist
The
next time you hear about:
- a
flood,
- a
heat-wave,
- a
forest fire,
- a
polluted river,
don't
ask only, "What happened?"
Ask:
- What
caused it?
- What
systems were affected?
- Who
suffered most?
- Could
it have been prevented?
- What
lessons should we learn?
Scientists
solve problems by seeing connections others miss.

where others see separate events.
To
recognise that every choice—whether wasting food, planting a tree, conserving
water, or designing a cleaner machine—becomes part of a much larger story.
Never
think that your actions are too small to matter. A river begins with drops. A
forest begins with seeds.
A
great scientist begins with questions.
A
better world begins with ordinary people making extraordinary choices every
single day.
And
remember this, my son:
Allah has not asked
you to solve every environmental problem on Earth.
He
has asked you to be faithful with the part of the Earth that He has entrusted
to you.
If
every person fulfilled that trust, the world would already be a better place.
May
Allah make you among those who understand the beauty of His creation, who use
knowledge with humility, who connect science with compassion, and who leave
behind a legacy of benefit for generations to come.
