The Future Scientist Series : Letter 14

The Scientists Who Will Save Tomorrow : Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Space Technology and the Future of Our Planet

My dear Ayan/Saad,

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

Today, I am not going to ask you to imagine the past. I want you to imagine the year 2045. You are now thirty-nine years old.

You are standing on the stage at an international conference. Scientists from every continent are listening to you. Behind you is a large screen displaying images of forests, oceans, satellites and solar farms.

A journalist asks: "Professor Ayan/Saad, when did you first decide to become an environmental scientist?"

You smile. Your thoughts travel back many years. Not to a university. Not to a laboratory. Not to a conference.

But to a series of letters written by your Abba!

Perhaps that day will never come.           Or perhaps it will.   Only Allah knows.

But whether you become a scientist, an engineer, a doctor, an entrepreneur or a teacher, I want you to understand something important.

The future belongs to people who can solve problems.

And environmental science is becoming one of the world's greatest problem-solving professions.

 

We Are Living Through a New Scientific Revolution

Think about how quickly the world has changed. Just a few decades ago:

There were no smartphones.

§  No GPS in our pockets.

§  No drones delivering medicine.

§  No Artificial Intelligence writing computer code.

§  No reusable rockets landing back on Earth.

Now imagine what your generation will witness. The future will not simply be different. It will be unimaginable.

The question is: Will humanity use these discoveries wisely?

Ø  Artificial Intelligence:        Teaching Computers to Notice Patterns

Suppose a farmer owns one thousand acres of land. Can he personally inspect every plant every day?

Impossible!!!

But a drone equipped with cameras can fly above the fields. Artificial Intelligence studies the images. It notices plants becoming unhealthy before human eyes can detect any problem.

The farmer receives a message. "Disease beginning in the north-west corner of your field."

Only that small area needs treatment.   Less pesticide.   Less waste.   More food.

This is not science fiction. It is already happening.

AI does not replace the farmer. It becomes the farmer's assistant.

Ø  Satellites:      The Eyes in the Sky

When you were younger, you probably imagined satellites as machines that helped us watch television.

Today, satellites do much more. They observe forests disappearing. They measure air pollution. They estimate crop health. They monitor glaciers. They detect illegal mining. They even measure how much groundwater is disappearing.

One satellite can quietly watch the entire Earth every day.

Scientists no longer ask only, "What happened?"

They ask, "What changed since yesterday?"

 

Ø  Precision Agriculture:        Every Plant Matters

Imagine watering an entire garden because one flower is thirsty.

That would waste enormous amounts of water.

Modern farms increasingly use precision agriculture.

·       Sensors measure soil moisture.

·       AI predicts weather.

·       GPS guides tractors with centimetre-level accuracy.

Each plant receives exactly what it needs.   No more.       No less.

The Earth appreciates precision.

Ø  Biotechnology:         Learning from Nature

Throughout this series, you have learned that nature has spent billions of years solving problems.

Biotechnology simply asks:     "What can we learn from living organisms?"

·       Scientists study bacteria that clean polluted water.

·       Fungi that break down waste.

·       Plants that tolerate drought.

·       Microorganisms that produce medicines.

Instead of fighting nature, they learn from it.

That is one of the greatest shifts in modern science.

Ø  Precision Fermentation

Do you remember when we spoke about precision fermentation?

Imagine tiny microorganisms working inside stainless-steel tanks. Instead of producing yoghurt or bread, they produce:

·       milk proteins,

·       medicines,

·       enzymes,

·       nutritional supplements,

·       and perhaps one day, many foods without needing huge areas of farmland.

If successful, such technologies could reduce pressure on forests, water and agricultural land.

Again, the goal is not to replace farmers. It is to give humanity more sustainable options.

 

Can We Remove Carbon from the Air?

For centuries, forests quietly removed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Now engineers are asking: Can machines do something similar?

Around the world, scientists are developing Direct Air Capture systems that remove carbon dioxide from the air.

The technology is still developing. It is expensive. But it shows something remarkable.

Human creativity is beginning to imitate nature.

 

Cities That Think

Imagine a city where:

§  Traffic lights adjust automatically.

§  Street lights switch on only when needed.

§  Water leaks are detected immediately.

§  Waste bins report when they are full.

§  Solar panels share electricity intelligently.

§  Electric buses choose the least congested routes.

Such places are called smart cities.

But I hope your generation remembers one important lesson. A city is not smart because it has computers. It is smart because it improves the lives of people while respecting the environment.

The Next Great Scientists

Ayan/Saad, the environmental scientists of your generation may have very different job titles.

Some will be:

ü  Climate modellers.

ü  AI engineers.

ü  Conservation biologists.

ü  Renewable energy designers.

ü  Water resource planners.

ü  Wildlife veterinarians.

ü  Environmental lawyers.

ü  Green architects.

ü  Space scientists.

ü  Bioengineers.

Yet all of them will share one goal.

Protect life.

 

But There Is One Thing AI Can Never Replace

Artificial Intelligence may become faster than us. Computers may calculate better than us. Robots may work longer than us. But there is one ability that machines cannot truly possess.

Moral responsibility!!!

A computer cannot decide whether something is right or wrong. It can recommend. It can calculate. It can predict.

ü  But only human beings can choose compassion over greed.

ü  Justice over convenience.

ü  Stewardship over exploitation.

That responsibility belongs to you.


Faith Meets Science

Allah says:    "Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?'" (Surah Az-Zumar 39:9)

Notice that the Qur'an honours knowledge. But it never praises knowledge alone. Knowledge is always connected to humility, gratitude and responsibility.

The more we understand creation, the greater our responsibility towards it becomes.

Scientific discovery should make us more grateful—not more arrogant.

A Lesson from the Prophet

The Prophet Muhammad made a beautiful supplication: "O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge..." (Sunan Ibn Majah)

He did not simply ask for more knowledge. He asked for beneficial knowledge.

That one word changes everything.

§  Knowledge that cures disease.

§  Knowledge that feeds the hungry.

§  Knowledge that protects rivers.

§  Knowledge that restores forests.

§  Knowledge that benefits people.

As you grow older, I pray that every skill you learn becomes beneficial to others.


Think like a Future Scientist

Whenever you hear about a new invention, ask yourself:

  • Does it solve a real environmental problem?
  • Who benefits from it?
  • Could it unintentionally create new problems?
  • Is it affordable?
  • Can poorer communities use it too?
  • Does it respect the balance Allah created?

These are the questions that distinguish inventors from wise innovators.

 

Beyond the ICSE Classroom

Everything you have learned so far—ecosystems, biodiversity, soil, water, air, conservation, sustainable development, appropriate technology—is not separate from AI or biotechnology.

It is the foundation upon which future discoveries will stand.

A scientist who understands computers but not ecology may create new problems.

A scientist who understands ecology but refuses innovation may miss new solutions.

The future needs both.

 

Your Mission This Week

Become a Future Inventor.

Choose one environmental problem that bothers you most.

It might be:

  • plastic pollution,
  • dirty rivers,
  • traffic,
  • food waste,
  • disappearing forests,
  • drought.

Now imagine it is the year 2045.

Design an invention that could help.      Don't worry if it sounds impossible.            Every great invention once sounded impossible.         Draw it.         Name it.            Describe how it works.

Most importantly, explain how it helps people without harming nature.

Before I Signoff...

Ayan/Saad, when people look at the future, they often ask, "What new technology will change the world?"

I ask a different question.

"What kind of people will use that technology?"

History has never been changed by machines alone. It has been changed by people of character who used knowledge with wisdom.

The Qur'an teaches us to reflect.  Science teaches us to investigate.

Together, they teach us something extraordinary:

The Earth is not merely a place to live.   It is a trust to protect.

One day, someone else will inherit the rivers you have known, the air you have breathed, and the trees that have shaded your path.

May they look back at your generation and say: "They did not leave us a perfect world—but they left us a better one than they received."

That, my dear son, is the true success of an environmental scientist.

May Allah bless you with beneficial knowledge, sincere intentions, courage to ask difficult questions, and the wisdom to use every gift He grants you in service of His creation.
